Data & analysis Amazon Quicksight now in General Availability!

Late last night, Amazon announced that their proprietary AWS data visualisation tool, Quicksight was now generally available in the US and Ireland. Quicksight aims to be a PowerBI-esque drag and drop visualisation tool, that allows you to access your data from AWS (and other sources) in seconds, regardless of scale. I’ve had a very quick go this morning, and visualised some data from a modest 1TB Redshift cluster after just a few minutes. The biggest challenge was finding out the correct IP range for Quicksight to enable access to my VPC (Thank you serverfault).

Web & technology Yahoo Site Explorer Closes Tomorrow

For those out there who like to use Yahoo’s Site Explorer to investigate the Yahoo index and mange their sites, the day you’ve been dreading has arrived. Yahoo have announced the final closure date for the service (after announcing earlier in the year that it would close “sometime this year”) and that day is tomorrow, Monday 21st November.  For managing your own sites, there’s always Bing or Google Webmaster tools but this obviously doesn’t give you the access to other sites on the web.  There are other services out there, like Majestic SEO or SEOmoz but you’re going to have to pay for these.

Web & technology Klout online influence scores gaining extra sway

If you’re a reasonably social media-savvy person, you’ll no doubt have heard of (and perhaps used) Klout, an innovative online service for measuring online influence via social media.  Klout’s unique selling point is their own calculation of influence, the Klout Score.  While it’s not exactly new to the social sphere, having been on the go in some shape or form since 2008, Klout have recently been engaging in a substantial push to increase the scope of their offering by adding many more social networks and features.

Self-confessed social “anti-network” site OneTrueFan has recently launched a new API, currently in beta, which provides a staggering level of access to their “Fanalytics” data.

OneTrueFan works via a combination of Facebook/Twitter integration and a custom browser add-on, which tracks your browsing behaviour.  By tracking which pages you visit, what content you share and what you post about, OneTrueFan can compare and rank all their users and offer valuable insight into users’ online behaviour.

Web & technology Sentiment Analysis Web Service – My Sentiments Exactly

A lot of my job as a software developer for a digital marketing company involves investigating new tools and finding out ways of analysing websites and their content, usage and trends.  As such, my team are always discussing new things we can explore and coming up with new ways of looking at the web.

We’ve discussed sentiment analysis many times before, checking keywords or site content to determine whether what’s being said is in a positive of negative tone.  One of our discussions today resulted in one of the guys finding uClassify’s Sentiment Classifier.
